We went to the St Hans day celebration in Gordarike Familiepark in Gol with Jo-Inge yesterday. We visited the copy of Gol Stavkirke (the original was bought by the then king and transported to Oslo) which was quite interesting. I didn't quite get the point of building a replica especially as the forefathers of the current inhabitants would happily have burnt the old church if it were not for the intervention of outsiders.
But in a small museum exhibition we watched part of a film that documented the building of the church that now stands in Gol. This project was an attempt to work out which techniques might have been used by medieval church builders. We got some context from this film and it seems it was a good idea to build a replica.
The weather has been a bit wet recently, but that didn't seem to deter people. The upside of overcast weather in Norway, is that the light and clouds are much more impressive. Here is Gol Stave Church in the evening sun.
Damae celebrated her end of school year with some acrobatics:
Can you guess how she landed?

I wondered where you'd spend Sankt Hans! - I really wanted to be in the Raftsundet up in the Lofoten Islands, ideally on the Hurtigruten again because it was perfect on a fine midsummer night, but unfortunately it wasn't to be, and the weather plays a big part in keeping a bonfire alight, doesn't it? Oh well...
ReplyDeleteHey Jerry, good to hear from you. Where are you then?
ReplyDeleteThe bonfire was helped along by five litres of petrol and a couple of litres of barbeque lighter fluid. It was burning nicely by the time we left.
On a hillock? She is braver than I am! Well done, Damae!
